More than a thousand women gathered to take part in celebrations marking Breastfeeding Week in Marikina City, eastern Manila, Philippines.
Mothers also heard of the nutritional benefits of breast milk amid an ongoing melamine scare which has rocked the country.
Some China-made milk products were found to be contaminated with the industrial chemical, which is known to cause kidney stones and kidney failure. It has already killed a number of babies.
Aileen Guevarra, Nutritionist Dietician of the Marikina City Health Office, added: "Our active participation on this advocacy has rendered us to host this significant event to affirm mother's nurturing role and their right to breastfeed anywhere and at anytime."
Because more and more women are now breastfeeding their babies, more and more are also finding that they enjoy breastfeeding enough to want to continue longer than the usual few months they initially thought they would.
UNICEF has long encouraged breastfeeding for two years and longer, and the American Academy of Pediatrics is now on record as encouraging mothers to nurse at least one year and as long after as both mother and baby desire.
Even the Canadian Paediatric Society, in its feeding statement, acknowledges that women may want to breastfeed for two years or longer.
Breastfeeding to 3 and 4 years of age has been common in much of the world until recently, and it is still common in many societies for toddlers to breastfeed.

interesting, i can't imagine that kind of gathering happening here, we're too prude as a nation.
saying that, mum kepy my sister amused on many a train/plane journey by ducking under a coat to feed her.
I think my sis was on and off the breast til she was about 2, on solids by then also, but still sucking for comfort til about 2 & half.
Not sure when it should stop, i guess before nursery for sure, but other than that I don't feel qualified to answer. I'd like to try breast feeding when I have kids, but hubby thinks it's a bit gross. Guess it's what you're used to?
