WEATHERMEN PREDICT AN AUGUST WASHOUT

Anyone with a summer holiday or big day out planned for the remaining few weeks of this year's so-called' summer' may want to think of an indoor alternative - as weathermen are predicting an August washout.

The summer that never really was is set to continue until the end of the month - unsettled with plenty of rain and strong winds.

Forecasters have predicted the coming week will be "autumnal", with low a band of low pressure seeing most of the UK suffering damp, blustery conditions.

A spokesman for Metcheck said that by the middle of the week, showers would be replaced by even worse weather.

"By Wednesday and the middle of the week things take a turn for the worse, in that as the low pressure begins to clear away, strong or very strong winds for the time of year are expected to develop.

"All in all another disastrous summer week coming up - if you can really use the word summer."

A Met spokesman added that August would be "well above average for rainfall".

Forecasters who initially predicted the possibility of an Indian summer in September now say it is unlikely to happen
