WARNING: DON'T EAT OUR SWANS

CALLS FOR CLAMPDOWN ON RIVER BANDITS FROM EASTERN EUROPE

There are few sights so serene as a swan sailing majestically along the Grand Union Canal.

Except, that is, when it is being chased by a gang of hungry, knife-wielding Eastern Europeans.

Polish and Lithuanian immigrants have been seen trying to drag the 20lb birds away, while the remains of some have been found butchered on the towpath near Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire.

Hundreds are believed to have disappeared from the area.

Now, just in case the newcomers are unaware of the law protecting swans, members of Luton Angling Club have come up with a sign making it clear that they are not for human consumption.

They hope British Waterways will erect it along the canal, along with similar notices featuring carp.

The custom of feasting on roast swan died out in Britain a century ago and killing wild swans - which officially belong to the Queen - is now punishable by six months in jail and a £5,000 fine.

Club official Joanne Edwards, 44, who patrols the canal regularly, described a number of tense confrontations with Poles and Lithuanians.

"Every time I try to explain to them that they can't treat our waters as a larder they just pretend they don't understand," she said.

"On one occasion there were four of them fishing and they'd already taken a fish without putting it back.

"Then they got a swan round the neck and pulled it back up on to the bank and the four of them were fighting with it, but luckily it was strong enough to pull away."

Miss Edwards, 44, from Dunstable, added: "A few years ago there were lots of swans on every section of the canal. I recently patrolled a six-mile stretch and saw just two. They're virtually gone from quieter stretches.

"Even the number of ducks seems to be less. It's dismal, and the police and Environment Agency don't seem to want to react."

She added that the migrants had failed to grasp the concept of catching fish for sport and returning them to the water.

"They think they can catch the fish for food, but the club leases the fishing rights on this stretch and our rules are clear that all fish caught must be put back.

"We first noticed the problem two or three years ago. Now the carp have nearly all gone. You're lucky to catch one at all in this canal."

I'd heard about the illicit coarse fishing by immigrants - but not swan rustling.

I guess we forget that for people who come from a society where the peasant culture is still strong, helping yourself to wild food seems natural.

I have to admit to pinching mushrooms, blackberries and elderflowers etc. - but haven't taken up poaching yet!

I admit I would like to know what Swan tastes like

Most unusual things are said to taste like chicken - except humans, which taste like pork! My late great-aunt once tasted hedgehog cooked by gipsies (baked in clay), and said that was like chicken.

(Actually, I suspect swan is probably quite gamey - perhaps more goose than chicken?)

I have found the following comment:

" It was not enjoyed for its taste – which is said to be like 'fishy mutton' ”

Also this news item:

SIR PETER'S TASTE FOR SWAN HAS HIM FALL FOUL OF THE LAW

SIR Peter Maxwell Davies, Master of the Queen’s Music, is under police investigation after officers raided his kitchen - and discovered he had prepared a dead swan for his dinner.

Sir Peter said he found the electrocuted bird beneath power lines and was planning to make it into a "delicious" terrine.

Do you actually want to say that we are uncivilized?
Have you ever been to Poland you stupid bitch.
Look at your chavs drinking on the streets and looking for troubles around. Look at all the girls shagging around and having children just to get benefits.
If you want to accuse somebody, you better learn about them.
Thanks

Slav,

You are the stupid one if you think 'peasantry' is an insulting term: it is a noble tradition that has sadly been lost in the UK. I am well aware of appalling public behaviour here, and have commented on it in the past.

I find your rudeness indicative of a lack of civilisation on your part, certainly.

I have allowed your comment in full - although I think you are being a little harsh and insulting towards Loiswakeman.

OK I admit, I was extremally rude and I am really sorry. I should be probably more angry with the people who actually did it (or keep doing it).
I just want to add that swan is considered to be king of birds in Poland and people really take care about them.
As you can imagine, they usually have some problems surviving cold winter. You can see lots of people feeding them.
As to loiswakeman's comment, I probably am a stupid peasant, but do not tell me it was not offensive. You can't generalize about nation taking only bad cases into consideration.
Sorry once again for the bad words, I deserved a slap in my face.
Regards,

hello there,
We all were shocked to hear about Lithuanians and polish eating swans. I am Lithuanian and I feel ashamed for those who do that. But I never before heard that anyone would eat swans in Lithuania. Well probably hundred years ago… but not now!! I talked about that to my husband who is big angler. He said that sometimes it happens that birds grab fry thinking its fish. Then you have to remove it or just cut line. He told me once he sow peasant hunt. There were dozens of them dead lying on the ground when hunters left. Horrible!!! Hunting and murdering for fun???
