WHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS VALENTINE'S?

That is the headline from an article in a local newspaper.

Does it seem odd or incorrect to you?

We are more used to seeing "Valentine's DAY".

But I think I know why it is done. February 14 this year is a Tuesday and many couples will not be able to go out for a romantic celebration on the actual day.

So restaurant owners want to maximise business by making it into a period, including a weekend, rather than just one day.

But I have also noticed the increased use of "New Year's", as in "We shall be away for New Year's".

It is an imported Americanism. I would say "We shall be away for the New Year".

We don't refer to "Easter's", or "Christmas's" - do we?

It is like one of my earlier grouches - "Going for a Ploughman's"

(Ploughman's Lunch)

Colin

Having grown up in a large town on the eastcoast of Canada midst coal miners and fishermen, I heard just about every bastardization of English that can be spoken. The worst being "youse guys" for the plural of you. And there's, "are you dressing up for 'halloween's'?" I see your point about 'christmas's' and 'new year's. Dreadful.

However, about the romantic celebration of Feburary 14, isn't the occassion named after Saint Valentine, hence, Valentine's Day would be correct:?: What's your take on that, Colin?

By the way, the homophobe neocons won the Canadian election Monday. A Conservative minority now rules our nation with intent to backtrack the legislation on 'same-sex marriage' which was voted on and given the green light by the previous minority government under the Liberals. Now the Cons, who won with merely thirty something percent of the popular vote, want to reverse the decision that a majority of the previous parliament passed. At the moment, I'm more miffed at that than any abuse of language can upstage.

That said, though, I'm glad to have overcome the early winter blahs and am back to my old self, surfing, reading and commenting on friends posts here in our blog.ca domain. I missed quite a few of your's and other's posts and am now catching up.

And Colin, irregardless if you hear from me or not, you're still a literary light who brightens my heart.
